Meet Ben Rushin – Waco, Texas

I knew I could do the work, but it seemed like my age was working against me. It was very frustrating! Thanks to SCSEP, my life is back on track!

After Ben was laid off from his long-time career in construction, he spent more than a year desperately searching for a job. Day after day, he’d sit at the computer applying for one job after another –but no response! “I knew I could do the work, but it seemed like my age was working against me,” he says. “It was very frustrating!”

His self-esteem was at an all-time low, and so was his bank account. He moved into a local shelter, and continued to apply for jobs. When a friend told him about Experience Works, his luck began to change. Through the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP), Ben was immediately placed in a janitorial training assignment at McLennan Community College. He was a quick learner, and really enjoyed his duties. For the first time in a long time, he felt like he had a purpose. Ben also took advantage of Experience Works’ JobReady training, earning a certification in janitorial/custodial skills.

His strong work ethic and abilities caught the attention of his supervisor at the college, so when a full-time custodial position opened-up –he was the perfect choice! The 62-year-old is thrilled with his work now dedicated to keeping the cosmetology building spic and span – everyone compliments him on the mirror-like shine he puts on the water fountains! Receiving a regular paycheck, Ben no longer worries about how he will pay his bills, plus he has health insurance, sick leave and vacation. Another added bonus –free haircuts!
